Japan Society JSDD publishes its Newsletter no 145

JSDD, Japan's Right to Die Society published its 145th Newsletter. Two issues are decribed:

- Suggestions for law reform on dying with dignity:  

keypoints raised:

  • "Life prolonging measures" in this bill refers to new cases only
  • "Life prolonging measures" in this bill can also include witholding (which is not starting) food and hydration
  • bill does not apply to (mentally) incompetent patients

- Revision of a Paper by Japan Geriatric Society (2001) on fundamental principles of caring for the terminally ill elderly patients. This revision includes an option for these elderly to have their artificial nutrition and stomach tube feeding (PEG) withdrawn.
